1.  Flower Barrels on Kingsway

flower barrels2008 was the first year that Kingsway participated in the "Communities in Bloom Flower Barrel Program.”    Kingsway Business Association (KBA) placed the colourful flower barrels at strategic locations, to enhance the experience of people coming into the Edmonton Kingsway Area, whether they drove on our streets, rode the bus or walked on our sidewalks.

In 2008, there were 68 barrels on our streets with 46 of the barrels purchased by our business members

We increased the barrels in 2009 to 87 barrels with 46 of the barrels purchased by our business members

Thank you to the many Kingsway Businesses that participated in this program.  This is a reminder to budget again for next year.  The cost should be very close to this year’s. ($160.00)

For the businesses who did not get involved this year, your chance will come next year.  The Kingsway Business Association along with Holes Greenhouse and the City of Edmonton, offers businesses within the Kingsway area the opportunity to participate in the Flower Planter project to help us present Edmonton Kingsway as a walkable, inviting, friendly and beautiful area as well as drawing attention to your business.  The barrels are prepared, delivered, watered, fertilized, replaced if need be and picked up at the end of the growing season.

By the many phone calls and people stopping by the office to tell us how welcoming the flower barrels made them feel, we believe this program was a huge success in enhancing Edmonton Kingsway.

Beautification With No Maintenance By YOU!

How easy can that be!

Looking forward to your participation next year !

The Kingsway Area has the largest display of independent flags in Edmonton.

This program was brought in the area to bring a splash of colours along the avenue,

to advertising events and milestones and encourage people to shop in our area.

  Litterbill

To ensure that Edmonton Kingsway was looking its best, the Kingsway Business Association hired Bill, the “Litter Buster” to keep an eye on Kingsway.  While keeping the litter at bay, Bill also kept us up to date on any problems that were happening along the street.  Bill was also available at an hourly rate to assist businesses with litter cleanup maintenance.

 Graffiti

We are very fortunate in Edmonton Kingsway not to have a huge problem with graffiti, unlike other areas in the City of Edmonton.

On April 1st, 2008 Enhanced Legislation for Graffiti Management in the Community Standards Bylaw 14600 took effect. This enables bylaw officers to work with property owners to remove graffiti promptly and if necessary, issue tickets or take remedial action with those who do not remove it. Edmonton Police Service will investigate graffiti crimes and pursue charges against graffiti offenders whenever possible.

The City will provide free Business Graffiti Clean up Kit to assist property owners in removing graffiti. Kits are available on a limited first come basis and include painting supplies (paint roller, brush, paint tray, tray liner, scraper, gloves, painting rags, spray bottle, coveralls) and 2 graffiti removal wipes. Kits also include a 25% discount coupon that may be used towards the purchase of paint.  How do you get a kit?  Call the KBA office  780.454.9716.

The best way to stop graffiti from spreading is to remove it as soon as it appears!

grafittiKeep your property clean:  Littered parking lots, broken fences, overgrown landscapes, poor lighting and established graffiti suggest neglect and are prime targets for graffiti vandals. Well-maintained properties help reduce graffiti and have a positive effect on the community.

Wipe out graffiti fast:  By removing graffiti quickly, you send a message that you will not tolerate graffiti on your property – and that you are a partner in protecting your community’s image and sense of security.

Enhance your building’s security:  Make it tougher for vandals to access your property. Better lighting, increased site surveillance and landscape changes help prevent access to possible graffiti sites.

Use Anti-Graffiti Coatings:  Use commercial products that are available to make cleaning easier.   Protecting your walls now could save time and expense later.

 4.  Façade Improvement Program

The City of Edmonton initiated a Façade Improvement Program in all Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ) areas several years ago with an application process for businesses who were interested in street-front      improvements.  This Program was a shared cost opportunity for businesses with the City of Edmonton. There are several businesses in Edmonton Kingsway who are interested in the program, however due to the lack of City funding; these businesses were not able to take advantage of this program during 2008.   There were no funds allocated for this important program in 2009.  Currently the Kingsway Business Association in conjunction with the other BRZs are lobbying Council for funds for 2010.
